ベトナム出身のレ ティ タン フィさんは、現在八戸市に住んでいます。

今年、八戸市で開催される「第60回 外国人による日本語弁論大会」で、123名の応募者の中から、12名の出場者の1人に選ばれました！

地元八戸からの出場者なので、ぜひみなさんに紹介したいと思いインタビューをしました。

インタビュー第１弾

フィさんは、ベトナム中部ハティン省の出身です。

どんな所か聞いてみると、「山や川など豊かな自然に囲まれたとても美しい所です。枯れた草の匂いって分かりますか？私の故郷はとても暖かい気候なので、いつもその匂いがするんです。」と教えてくれました。
私は、雨が降っている日が多いシアトルから来たので、どんな匂いか分かりませんが、いい匂いなのか気になりました。

フィさんは、「私は好きです。子供の頃、よく畑で友達と一緒に遊んだり、母が水牛の世話をする手伝いをしていましたから、その匂いを嗅ぐと、小さい頃を思い出して懐かしくなります。たまに八戸でもしますよ。特に晴れて乾燥した日。今度、教えますね。」。と話してくれました。楽しみです！

「あと、夏になるとよく蝉の声が聞こえて、蛍の光も見られますよ。」と聞いて、まるで小説の舞台のような風景が広がっているのだろうなぁと思いました。

ベトナムといえば、美味しい食べ物でも有名ですよね。

一番好きなベトナム料理は何か、フィさんに聞いてみました。「ベトナムはフォーが有名なので、フォーを紹介したいところですが、一番好きなのは、母が育てた鶏の肉です。」

フィさんのお母さんは、50羽の鶏を飼っていて、その鶏肉を使った料理が全部好きだそうです。ちなみに日本で好きな料理は？と聞くと、「焼肉が大好きです。あと、すき焼きも！肉食ですね（笑）」と答えてくれました。

Born and raised in Vietnam, Huy Le Thi Thanh is currently living in Hachinohe.

This year, Hachinohe City will be hosting The 60th International Speech Contest in Japanese, and Huy was among the 12 participants selected from 123 applicants to compete in this nationally televised speech contest.

Since she is one of the local participants selected from Aomori Prefecture, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to interview Huy on her background and also her thoughts on the upcoming Speech Contest. For those living in the Hachinohe area, you can come support our participants and watch the speech contest!

Huy has nostalgic memories of her hometown, a place called Ha Tinh located in the central region of Vietnam. When asked to describe her hometown, she replied:

“It’s a beautiful place with rivers, mountains and lots of nature. Do you know the smell of withered grass? My hometown is a very warm place, so the air is always filled with this smell”.

Of course, coming from a place where it is constantly raining, I personally am not familiar with the smell of dry and withered grass.
So I ask Huy if this is a smell that she actually likes, and indeed it is: “When I was younger, I could always be found out in the fields playing with my friends or helping my mother watch over our water buffaloes, and so that smell reminds me of my childhood. Sometimes I can smell it in Hachinohe too, especially on days when it’s dry and sunny. Next time I’ll show you what I mean”.

“Also, in the summer, you can hear the cicadas chirping and see the glow of fireflies,” she adds. Her hometown sounds like a scene from a fairytale.

Vietnam is also well known for delicious food. For Huy, “Pho noodles are really famous in Vietnam and I want to introduce it, but honestly, my favorite food is chicken from my mother’s farm”.
Huy’s mother owns around 50 chickens, and she tells me that she loves to eat everything made from the chickens that her mother raises. As for Japanese food, “I love grilled meat. Pretty much anything with meat. I also really like sukiyaki,” which is like a Japanese hotpot.

Next time, I will be asking Huy about how she started learning Japanese, and about her experiences living in Aomori! Stay tuned for more.

インタビュー第２弾

フィさんは、昨年の5月に八戸に来ました。

「そろそろ１年になりますね～」。

私はそれを聞いてビックリしました。フィさんの日本語は、みんなにすごく上手と言われているので、もっと長い間日本に住んでいるのだと思っていました。

八戸に来る前はベトナムに住んでいましたが、日本語も向こうで勉強したそうです。

「最初は日本語センターに2ヶ月ぐらい通っていましたが、そのあと辞めて、自分で勉強しました。その後、日本語クラブに入ったり、日本人とのボランティア活動によく参加したりして、仲間からたくさんのことを学びました。日本語を勉強し始めてからは、約3年半になります。」

日本語の授業を受けなくても、自ら日本語の練習をする機会を見つけていったフィさん。きっとすごく一生懸命に勉強したのでしょうね！

八戸での生活は？と聞いてみると、「すごく楽しい！毎日、面白くて優しい上司や同僚と会話ができるし、週1回、みちのく国際日本語教育センターの日本語教室で面白いクラスメートにも会える。たまに先生の料理も食べられます。あと、日本の景色はとても綺麗です。」と答えてくれました。

ちなみにフィさんは、八戸の「みちのく中小企業協同組合」という会社で、ベトナム語の翻訳と通訳の仕事をしています。書類作成など、一般の社員の方がやっている仕事もするそうです。

「仕事で使う日本語のミスをなくすように一所懸命勉強したいです。そして、せっかくなので日本の歴史や文化なども学びたいですね。あと、もし時間があれば日本の農業について調べてみたいです。ベトナムに戻ったら、農園を作りたいです。」と話していました。

八戸やその周辺には様々な農場があり、優しい農家の方がたくさんいらっしゃるので、見学したり体験できるチャンスがあるといいですね！

Huy came to Hachinohe during May of last year. “It’s almost been about a year, huh!”, she says.

 When I first heard that she came just last year, I was pretty surprised. I think a lot of people hear Huy speak Japanese and expect that she must have lived here for a very long time already. Before coming to Hachinohe, Huy was living in Vietnam where she began her Japanese studies. She says, “I first started learning Japanese at a language center, for about 2 months. After that, I stopped attending the classes and started self-studying. It was during this time that I joined a Japanese social club and started doing volunteer activities with Japanese people, so I learned a lot from the friends that I met there. In total it’s been about 3 years since I began learning Japanese”. I find it amazing that even though Huy didn’t take formal Japanese classes, she was able to find a way to study and improve on her language skills. She must have studied very hard.

In regards to life in Hachinohe, she gives her experience a five star review and says that “It’s really fun! Every day, I get to work and chat with my very kind coworkers and bosses. Once a week, I go to a Japanese language class and meet with my interesting classmates, and sometimes we even get to try our teachers’ home cooking. And of course, the natural scenery in Japan is very beautiful”.

By the way, Huy works in Hachinohe at a company called Michinoku Partnership Cooperative (note: not a formal translation). Her main job is Vietnamese translation and interpretation, but she also does regular Japanese office work, such as creating and organizing documents and reports. Her current goal for working in Japan is to “study hard in order to conduct business professionally in Japanese without making any mistakes. And while I’m here, I hope to learn more about Japanese history and culture. Additionally, I want to learn and experience more about Japanese farms because when I return to Vietnam, I want to have my own farm business”. There are so many different types of farms and a lot of kind people in Hachinohe. I sure hope there will be plenty of chances for Huy to see farm life in Japan!

インタビュー第３弾 ~NEW!~ （最終回）

フィさんインタビュー第3弾（最終回）では、八戸代表として出場する「外国人による日本語弁論大会」について聞いてみたいと思います。

全国レベルの弁論大会に、しかも母国語ではない日本語の弁論大会に出るのは、とても勇気がいることですし、本当に素晴らしいですよね！

なぜ、この弁論大会に参加しようと思ったのか聞いてみると、

「私は自分が体験したことを文章に書くのが好きです。ベトナム語と日本語では、文章の書き方が全く違うのですが、あえて難しいことにチャレンジしてみようと思いました。日本に住み始めたときは、たくさんカルチャーショックを受けました。でも、周りの人達のおかげで、前向きに考える事ができるようになり、日本に住むのが楽しくなりました。今回は、そんな皆さんに感謝の気持ちを伝えたいです。」と答えてくれました。

新しい場所（外国）に住む時、それまでの物事の見方や考え方を変えなければならない場面がたくさんありますが、フィさんには、そのチャレンジを支えてくれる優しい友達の存在があったのですね。

全国123名の応募者の中から、12名の出場者の1人に選ばれたと分かった時、フィさんは「ビックリしました！と同時に、私の日本語レベルはまだ低いのにこのようなチャンスを頂いてとても有り難いと感じています。周りにはもっと優秀な仲間がたくさんいるので、自分は本当に幸運だと思っています。」と話してくれました。

大会に向けての意気込みは？

「自分の日本語力を高めたい。あと、他の参加者のみなさんとの異文化交流も楽しみたいです。そして、これまでお世話になった方々に感謝の気持ちを届けたいです。」

最後に、皆さんにメッセージを！

「みなさん、いつも応援してくれてありがとうございます。大会当日、皆さんにお会いできることを楽しみにしています。ぜひ見に来てください！」

For this last portion of the interview, I will be talking to Huy about the upcoming Japanese Speech Contest. I think it is amazing how she had the courage to participate in a speech contest, much less in a language that is not her native tongue!

When I asked her why she decided to apply for the contest, she said, “I like to write about my own experiences”. However, Huy says that creating sentences in Vietnamese is completely different from Japanese, so she took this opportunity as a challenge for herself. Not only is Huy up for the challenge but she also hopes to take this opportunity to thank the people around her who supported her throughout her transition to living in Hachinohe. She says, “When I first arrived in Japan, I had culture shock. It was through the help of my friends who showed me that if I changed my perspective and way of thinking, I could fully enjoy living in Japan”. For Huy, and for many others like her, living in a new place or a new country requires us to reevaluate and potentially change the way we think and perceive things. I’m glad that Huy had so many kind friends who helped her through that transition.

When Huy received the notice that she was selected as one of the 12 participants selected from the 123 submissions for the Japanese Speech Contest, Huy was so surprised. “More than that, my Japanese language level is still not that advanced, so I was just grateful for the chance to participate. Even until now, I keep thinking that I got lucky. Everyone is really talented!” she says.

Additionally, Huy is excited for the chance to improve her Japanese skills and “participate in cultural exchange with all of the other Speech Contest participants”.

And lastly, here are a few words from Huy.

“Thank you all for your support and encouragement. I’m looking forward to meeting you on the day of the Japanese Speech Contest, so I hope to see you there!”
